Experience:

Mr. Wilfrid L. Gates, Jr. is Chairman of Gates, Leighton & Associates, Inc. He is the Chief Administrative Officer and Director of International Projects. Mr. Gates has been a Landscape Architect for forty-two years. In that time, he has been lead designer for municipal parks and playground planning, scenic byway planning, visual analysis and landscape design for large scale transportation projects. He has designed land plans for resorts, hotels, business parks and cluster developments. Mr. Gates is principal planner for GLA’s international resort, hotel and institutional projects.

Mr. Gates is a Commissioner of the Providence Capital Center Commission and Chairman of its Design Review Committee. He is past president of the Environmental Council of Rhode Island; he was President of CLEAN RHODE ISLAND and President of Save the Bay, Inc. Mr. Gates was a long-time member of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee to the Solid Waste Management Corporation.

Mr. Gates served as an East Providence, Rhode Island City Councilman-at-large and is past Chairman of the Boards of East Providence Chamber of Commerce and the East Providence Public Libraries. He is Past President of the East Providence/Seekonk Rotary Club. He is a member of the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Background:

Prior to forming his own office in 1972, Mr. Gates was a Landscape Architect for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

Qualifications:

Wilfrid L. Gates, Jr. is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. He is Past-President of the Alumni Association. Mr. Gates was Founding President of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He was a member of the Landscape and Environmental Design Committee of the Transportation Research Board.

Memberships:

Mr. Gates is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Highland Memorial Park, a private cemetery located in Johnston, Rhode Island. Mr. Gates has also been elected an incorporator of The Providence Foundation.
